DRILL 1: Pure Speed Exit
Objective: Develop the ability to beat a defender using change of pace and explosive acceleration rather than complex footwork.
Setup:
- 1 defender cone
- Exit line 6–8 yards beyond defender
- Start 6–8 yards from defender
Execution:
- Approach defender cone at controlled speed.
- Take a shorter preparation touch 1–2 yards before the cone.
- Push the ball sharply outside defender’s reach.
- Accelerate immediately for 6–8 yards past exit line.
- Reset and alternate sides.
- 12 reps per side.
Coaching Points:
- Preparation touch shortens rhythm
- Exit touch longer and decisive
- First two steps explosive
- Slight forward body lean
Common Errors:
- Exit touch too soft
- No visible change of pace
- Move too far from defender
- Upright acceleration
- Watching ball instead of space
DRILL 2: Inside Across → Shield → Outside Exit
Objective: Train cutting across the defender’s line, protecting the ball, and exiting using a coordinated two-touch sequence.
Setup:
- 1 defender cone
- 1 pressure cone placed 1 yard behind defender
- Exit lane 6–8 yards forward
- Start 6–8 yards from defender
Execution:
- Approach defender cone at moderate speed.
- Take an inside touch across your body, crossing defender’s line.
- Step across ball to shield (simulate contact).
- Use outside of foot to push ball diagonally forward.
- Accelerate 6–8 yards into exit lane.
- 12 reps alternating sides.
Coaching Points:
- Inside touch must cross defender’s path
- Body protects ball before second touch
- Outside touch increases separation
- Immediate acceleration
Common Errors:
- Turning backward (U-turn behavior)
- Ball exposed after inside touch
- No body positioning during shield
- Outside touch too soft
- Delayed acceleration
DRILL 3: Deception Freeze → Opposite Exit
Objective: Develop upper-body deception to freeze a defender before exiting opposite direction.
Setup:
- 1 defender cone
- Exit gate 4–5 yards wide
- Start 6 yards from defender
Execution:
- Approach defender cone.
- Perform strong body fake (shoulder drop, head fake, step-over).
- Commit fake fully.
- Push ball diagonally forward opposite direction.
- Accelerate through exit gate.
- 15 reps alternating sides.
Coaching Points:
- Sell deception with upper body
- Keep ball tight during fake
- Exit touch diagonal and forward
- Immediate burst
Common Errors:
- Weak body fake
- Ball too far during deception
- Exit touch sideways
- No change of pace
- Inconsistent rhythm
DRILL 4: Weak-Side Commitment Exit
Objective: Force technical efficiency and confidence when exiting toward weaker side.
Setup:
- 1 defender cone
- Exit line 6–8 yards forward
- Must execute move toward weak side
Execution:
- Approach defender cone.
- Execute move toward weak side only.
- Push ball forward using weaker foot.
- Accelerate 6–8 yards past exit line.
- 10 reps per side.
Coaching Points:
- Full commitment to weak side
- Lock ankle on contact
- Strong plant direction
- Explode immediately
Common Errors:
- Switching back to strong foot
- Hesitation before exit
- Weak push
- Loss of balance
- Sloppy acceleration
